Collection: Sara Crappe
Sara is a draughtswoman with a keen interest in nature, animals and landscapes, largely thanks to her childhood in the countryside. During her studies, first a bachelor's degree in Mons and then a master's degree in Brussels, she discovered the city and its urban landscapes. Her work then evolved to blend town and country, and ended up going back to its origins with fossil ammonites, which continue to fascinate her today. Her work thus takes on a different temporality, questioning the relationship between past and present. After her studies at La Cambre, she began to question her relationship with the body. Having spent a long time analysing the living, she was obviously missing Man. However, she doesn't want to mix the two, because she believes that human consciousness sets us apart, whether we are good or bad. It is this reflection that led her to her series ‘IS NOT SUMMER BODY’.
The ‘IS NOT SUMMER BODY’ series, begun in 2022, is still ongoing. In her research into the body, the artist begins by questioning her own relationship with it. Following the Covid pandemic, she was faced with a 13kg weight gain, which prevented her from appreciating herself in front of a mirror. She realised that social networks weren't helping, as they constantly exposed people to beauty standards that were often far from the norm.
So she decided to poll her followers on Instagram, proposing a simple method: ‘Send me a photo of a part of your body that you like or dislike, and tell me why.’ To her great surprise, she received many messages. She realised that everyone had something they didn't like about themselves, as the majority of responses highlighted a body part considered to be a flaw. She decided to draw these bodies, taking care not to identify the people involved. In her work, the body part becomes the central element of the drawing. Taking the time to talk to the participants is essential for her, as it allows her to understand the people's experiences and the reasons why these parts of their bodies cause them problems. This series is still ongoing, as she is always looking for new bodies to draw. For her, there is nothing more important than drawing: the way someone looks at their own body becomes the way we look at a work of art. Her aim is not to embellish bodies, but to show what people hide, giving them a new place in the artistic space.
